John Brown was born 19 December 1931
• Appointed to the Hawke Government Ministry in 1983 and over the next five years was Minister for Administrative Services, Minister for Defence Support, Assistant Minister for Business & Technology, Minister for the Environment, Arts and the Territories and for the entire period as Minister for Sport and Tourism.
• His custodianship of the Tourism portfolio ushered in a new approach to our (now) largest industry. Never before had a Federal government treated tourism as a serious issue and with the launch of the Paul Hogan ads on an unsuspecting American market, and subsequent campaigns in Japan and Europe, the legendary tourism boom began. Australia welcomed 2.3 million foreign visitors in 1988 as compared with the 800,000 that came in 1983.
• For the Hogan campaign John was awarded the Australian Institute of Marketing Gold Award. He established the Australian Tourism Awards, which annually recognise outstanding performance by practitioners in this industry.
• John was also been one of only five Australians ever honoured with the Olympic Silver Order of Merit for his support of the Olympic Movement, presented by IOC President Samaranch in 1986
• An active sportsman all his life (single digit golf handicap, Western Suburbs Rugby League and Cricket, Tennis and Squash), he is the only Australian to be made Honouree of the US Academy of Sport for his contribution to international sport. He was elected a Life Member of the Australian Institute of Sport.
• The contribution John Brown made to his country was recognised by News Corporation, which named him as their "Australian of the Year" in 1986.
• The John Brown Foundation (now known as the Sport & Tourism Youth Foundation) was established in 1988, to fund scholarships for talented young Australians, honouring John’s contribution to sport and tourism.
• In October 1989, John launched The Tourism Task Force Ltd, a peak industry lobby group. The Prime Minister described it as "the most powerful industry group established in Australia". John was appointed Chairman and became tourism's chief advocate in representing the industry to all State and Federal Governments. He retired from that role in 2003 but continues to chair TTF’s Commission of Governors.
• Some honorary positions currently held are: Patron & Chairman, Sport and Tourism Youth Foundation; Patron, Les Clefs d'Or; Member, Hospitality Course Advisory Boards for the universities of New South Wales, Bond and Western Sydney; Member, Mission Australia Board; Director, National Aboriginal Sports Corporation.
• In 1999, John was made an Adjunct Professor of Tourism at La Trobe University in Melbourne.
• Professional positions currently held include: Emeritus Chairman, The Tourism Task Force; Director, Macquarie Tourism and Leisure.
• Honoured with an Order of Australia award in June 1993 for his service to Sport, Tourism and the Australian Parliament.
• A Member of the Olympic Bid teams for Brisbane (1992), Melbourne (1996) and the successful Sydney Bid (2000), John was appointed by Premier John Fahey and Prime Minister Paul Keating as a Founding Director of the Sydney Olympic Games Organising Committee and the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee and in 1998.
• John was named the Olympic Attache to Greece for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
• John Brown was awarded a Centenary Medal by Prime Minister Howard in 2003 for his lifetime contribution to Australian society.
• John now serves as a director and consultant to a range of national corporate and philanthropic boards and acts as a Professional Motivational Speaker around Australia.
